Frequently Asked Moving Questions

Frequently Asked Moving Questions

Find answers about moving estimates, local and long-distance pricing, packing, scheduling, deposits, claims, COIs, crews, trucks, and how to prepare before move day.

Estimates & Pricing

Your estimate is calculated from the details of your move, including inventory, pickup and delivery locations, access conditions, requested services, and any items that may need special handling.

For larger or more complex moves, we may recommend a virtual or in-home estimate. This helps confirm inventory, access, packing needs, heavy items, and the full service scope before your move is scheduled.

Local moves are billed hourly. The hourly rate depends on the crew size and the number of trucks needed for the job.

Crew size is based on the size and complexity of the move. When the job requires it, WellKnown Moving may provide two, three, or four movers.

A local move is a move within 50 miles of the primary city served by the WellKnown Moving location handling your move.

The distance is calculated from the main city of that service location, not from the business address.

Yes. Local moves have a 3-hour minimum.

After the minimum, time is billed in 15-minute increments. A standard travel-time charge also applies to local moves, with a 30-minute minimum.

Local move time is billed in 15-minute increments after the 3-hour minimum.

If the move goes slightly over the minimum, you are not automatically charged for a full extra hour. After the minimum, time is measured in smaller increments.

Standard travel time is added to local moves. Travel time has a 30-minute minimum.

Travel time covers getting the crew and truck to and from the job. Your estimate process will explain how your move is billed and the exact structure that applies.

Yes. Long-distance moves are charged at a flat rate based on your confirmed move details and exact inventory.

Any move over 50 miles is considered a long-distance move. WellKnown Moving provides long-distance moving services across the continental U.S.

Once your move is confirmed, your agreed hourly rate for a local move or agreed flat rate for a long-distance move will not change.

For local hourly moves, the final total can still depend on the actual time needed to complete the job. For long-distance flat-rate moves, the confirmed flat rate stays the same as long as the confirmed move details and scope stay the same.

If your inventory changes, let us know as soon as possible.

For local moves, more items usually mean more time. For long-distance moves, the flat-rate quote is based on confirmed inventory, so major changes may require an updated estimate.

There is no separate stair fee.

Stairs still matter because they can affect crew size, move time, access, and planning. Difficult access may increase the time required for a local move or change the plan for a long-distance move.

The price includes movers, the truck, transportation costs such as fuel and tolls, and basic moving supplies.

Standard moving and protection equipment is included, such as dollies, two-wheelers, furniture pads, shrink wrap, and tape.

Additional fees may apply for heavier items.

This depends on the item, access conditions, crew requirements, and overall move scope. If a heavy-item fee applies, it should be discussed during the estimate and included where known.

What's Included in a Standard Move

A standard move includes loading, transportation, unloading, furniture wrapping and protection, basic moving equipment, and basic furniture disassembly and reassembly.

The exact scope depends on what is confirmed during the estimate process. Services that are not confirmed in the estimate may need to be reviewed before they can be added.

Yes. Standard moving and protective equipment is provided.

This includes dollies, two-wheelers, furniture pads, shrink wrap, and tape. These materials help protect furniture and support safe handling during the move.

Yes. Furniture protection is included in standard moving service.

Furniture is wrapped and protected for transit. The exact protection depends on the item, move type, and handling requirements.

WellKnown Moving disassembles and reassembles furniture that needs to be taken apart for safe moving and set back up after delivery.

There is no separate fee for standard furniture disassembly and reassembly. For local hourly moves, this work can increase the total time needed to complete the move.

Your inventory list is the basis for planning crew size, truck space, timing, and pricing.

If you want to add items, please let us know as soon as possible. The crew may be able to help with additional items on move day, but extra work can affect time, cost, and service scope.

Sometimes. Additional help depends on the item, access, crew availability, schedule, and whether the added work fits the move scope.

Local moves may require additional time for extra work. For long-distance moves, larger additions may require the estimate to be reviewed.

Yes, when those items are part of the confirmed move scope.

If you have items in a garage, storage unit, basement, attic, or another space, include them in your estimate. This helps us plan the correct crew, truck space, equipment, and timing.

Appliance handling depends on the appliance and the work required.

Movers can generally move standard appliances if they are properly disconnected and ready for transport. Plumbing, gas, and electrical disconnection or reconnection are not automatically included and may require a qualified specialist.

Packing & Materials

Packing is not automatically included with every move.

Your estimate includes the services confirmed during the estimate process. If you need help packing items into boxes, we can discuss full packing, partial packing, or item-specific packing as an add-on.

Moving is the physical handling, loading, transportation, and unloading of your belongings.

Packing is preparing loose items for transport by placing them in boxes or using additional materials to protect them. Packing services are available by request and must be confirmed before the move.

Yes. Full packing may be available for your move when confirmed in advance.

Full packing means the crew helps pack items that need to be boxed before transport. The plan depends on home size, item quantity, material needs, access, and schedule.

Yes. If you only need help packing certain rooms, fragile items, kitchen items, artwork, or selected belongings, we can provide partial packing.

Tell us what you need packed during the estimate so we can plan the correct labor, supplies, and timing.

Yes. You may pack your own boxes.

If you handle the packing, make sure boxes are closed, secure, and ready to move before the crew arrives. Labeling boxes by room also helps unloading go more smoothly.

Yes. WellKnown Moving can work with materials you already have, as long as they are appropriate for the items being moved.

Packing materials can also be provided when packing service is requested and confirmed as part of the move plan.

Boxes should be strong, sealed, and safe for movers to lift and carry.

Avoid packing large boxes with heavy items such as books, tools, or heavy kitchen goods. In general, heavier items belong in smaller boxes, while lighter items can go in larger boxes.

Discuss fragile and high-value items before move day.

Items such as artwork, glass, marble tops, antiques, and other delicate belongings may need extra protection, special packing, or specific handling. WellKnown Moving does not charge a separate moving fee just because an item is fragile, but packing service or packing materials for fragile items may add cost when requested.

It depends on the size of the packing job and the move timeline.

Small or partial packing may be available on move day with prior confirmation. Larger packing jobs may need to be scheduled before move day so the crew has enough time to prepare everything properly.

Scheduling, Arrival Windows & Delivery Timing

The earlier you can plan, the better, especially during busy moving seasons. Ideally, book your move 3-4 weeks in advance.

It can still be okay to book one week before your move, or even less, depending on availability. Timing depends on location, crew schedule, move size, access conditions, and requested services.

Same-day moves may be available depending on location, crew availability, schedule, move size, and access requirements.

Same-day service should be treated as conditional, not guaranteed. Contact the team with your inventory, addresses, and timing needs so availability can be checked.

Arrival windows are often discussed during scheduling.

Do not assume an exact arrival time unless it is confirmed for your specific move. Traffic, weather, parking, building access, elevators, and earlier jobs can all affect arrival timing.

Move duration depends on inventory, access, packing readiness, parking, stairs, elevators, walking distance, crew size, and travel conditions.

During the estimate process, we can help you understand the factors most likely to affect your move. For local moves, extra time can affect the final cost because local jobs are billed hourly.

Long-distance delivery timing depends on distance, route, schedule, inventory, access, weather, and the confirmed delivery plan.

We can provide a delivery range for your specific move during the estimate and scheduling process. Do not assume a specific delivery time unless it is confirmed for your move.

Some long-distance moves may have next-day delivery depending on distance, route, schedule, and crew availability.

Next-day delivery is not automatic for every move. The delivery plan is confirmed during the estimate process before the move is booked.

Common timing challenges include unfinished packing, difficult parking, long walks, elevator delays, building restrictions, traffic, weather, unexpected inventory changes, and access issues at pickup or delivery.

The more detail you provide before move day, the easier it is to plan the correct crew, truck, schedule, and equipment.

Contact WellKnown Moving as soon as you know you need to change your date.

Rescheduling depends on the move schedule and crew availability. Deposit and cancellation terms may also apply, especially for long-distance moves.

Payments, Deposits & Cancellation

No deposit is required for local moves.

Long-distance moves require an approximately 10% deposit to hold the date. Any required deposit is included in the all-inclusive flat-rate price.

For local moves, payment is collected in full after job completion.

The final cost is based on the hourly structure, confirmed rate, applicable mileage, and actual time required to complete the move.

For some long-distance moves, half of the total balance is due after loading and the remaining half is due on delivery.

Review the payment plan before booking so you know what is owed and when.

We accept cash, credit cards, and certified or cashier's checks payable to WellKnown Moving.

Card payments include a 3.5% processing fee.

WellKnown Moving requires at least 14 days' cancellation notice for local moves.

For long-distance moves, deposits are 100% refundable when canceled at least 14 days before the scheduled move date.

Yes. Long-distance deposits are 100% refundable if you cancel at least 14 days before your scheduled move date.

If cancellation is closer to the move date, terms should be discussed with the team based on the service and timing booked.

Coverage, Claims & Item Protection

Yes. Basic liability coverage is included.

Review coverage, valuation, and claim details carefully, especially if you are moving high-value, fragile, antique, or specialty items.

No moving company can honestly guarantee that damage will never happen.

WellKnown Moving carefully handles your furniture and approved belongings, but every move involves physical handling. If something is damaged or missing, you can file a claim for review.

Submit a claim through the claims process with detailed information.

Helpful details include photos, move date, pickup and delivery addresses, item descriptions, and a clear explanation of the issue. Receipts or estimated values can support the review. Keep damaged items and packing materials until the review is complete.

Yes. Discuss high-value, delicate, oversized, or specialty items before the move.

Examples include antiques, artwork, glass, marble tops, pianos, safes, gym equipment, and items over 200 lbs. These items may require extra planning, protection, crew requirements, or, for heavy and specialty items, additional fees.

No. WellKnown Moving does not charge a separate moving fee just because an item is fragile.

If a fragile item needs professional packing, extra packing materials, custom packing, or a packing service, that packing work may add cost. These details should be reviewed during the estimate process.

Building Requirements, Parking & COI

Yes. If a building requires a Certificate of Insurance, WellKnown Moving may provide one.

Apartment buildings, condos, high-rises, office buildings, and managed properties often require COIs.

No. Not all buildings require a COI.

Check with your building or property manager before move day. If a COI is required, provide the details to WellKnown Moving as soon as possible.

COI requirements can include the building name, property manager contact, required coverage limits, additional insured language, move date, and pickup or delivery address.

Your building or property manager should provide these requirements. Send them to the WellKnown Moving team so they can be reviewed.

If your building requires an elevator, loading dock, or service entrance reservation, please make those arrangements with building management.

WellKnown Moving can plan around those restrictions after you provide the details, but building clearances and reservations are not automatically handled for every move.

Parking permit requirements depend on the city, building, and street conditions.

In most cases, the customer is responsible for checking whether a permit or reserved parking is required. WellKnown Moving can plan around the access information you provide, but do not assume the moving company will automatically obtain permits.

The move can often still be completed, but it may take longer.

If the crew has to park farther away, carry items a longer distance, wait for access, or work around building restrictions, the added time can increase the final cost. Clear access usually makes the move more efficient.

Before Move Day
