Before you think about price, go outside and look at where a moving truck could actually stand outside your door. What decides whether your Joliet move is priced by the hour
Distance decides it. Anything inside fifty miles of the servicing city is an hourly, non-binding local move. Both are weight-restricted on precisely the stretch that serves the homes there. None of this is your problem to solve — the police department keeps public truck-route maps and we plan the approach — but it is why the drive in is sometimes longer than the map suggests, and why we ask for the nearest through-street rather than just the postcode. The corridor most crews arrive on is itself mid-rebuild: the Interstate 80 reconstruction through Will County runs into 2028 and narrows the road near the river. Timing is given as a range for that reason, never as a fixed hour.
Why the truck cannot wait outside
A common request is to load in the evening and deliver the next morning. In Joliet the answer is no, and the reason is checkable rather than a matter of company policy. The code bars any truck over eight thousand pounds from standing on any street, highway or alley in the city except while loading or unloading, and requires it moved immediately once that is done. Separately, nothing may sit on a public street for more than forty-eight hours at a stretch.
What that changes for you is the start time, not the plan. An uphill carry on an iced January path is a real difference in time, and time is the price.
So measure three things before the estimate: the narrowest point on the stair turn, the narrowest doorway, and the rise from the pavement to your front door. Most homes here have basements on limestone foundations, and basement contents are the single most under-reported part of any inventory — which matters, because the hourly rate can change if the job turns out significantly larger than described.
